Military Tuition Assistance, sometimes referred to as Armed Forces Tuition Assistance, is a benefit authorized by Congress, allowing the various branches within the Armed Forces—Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard—to pay up to 100% of the tuition expenses of their members. The individual services set their own requirements for eligibility, such as training qualification, unit assignment, and time in service criteria.

For Commissioned Officers, federal law requires a service obligation following completion of TA-funded courses: a 2-year ADSO for AC Officers, and a 4-year RDSO for SR Officers. Per DoDI 1322.25, the individual services may add to this standard, for either Enlisted or Commissioned service members.

Consult your Education Center for the most current information on your service’s regulations:

The application process is different for each service. Tuition Assistance funds are generally paid directly to the educational institution by the individual services. You have earned your Tuition Assistance. It is an excellent opportunity to further your education.

Tuition Assistance Top-Up Benefits

In order to be eligible for Top-Up Benefits, you must already have been approved to receive federal tuition assistance. Prior to October 30, 2000, you were not able to combine your VA benefits with the Montgomery GI Bill, and the military would only pay 75 percent of your total tuition using tuition assistance. If the military cannot cover 100 percent of your tuition, you can elect to receive your TA benefits for all or part of your remaining tuition expenses. The program was designed to supplement other tuition assistance programs you already have qualified for if they do not cover 100 percent of your tuition costs.
